Dr.Dre & Snoop Dogg - "Still Dre" - at the Up In Smoke Tour Concert in 1999
Is it me, or have you realized, just by looking at this video, that hip-hop has really died.
I understand! Things are changing ... Changing for the worst! Look at this concert Dr.Dre and Snoop Dogg had. It was so rockstar-ish. I don't care what hip-hop concert you attend today, it's nothing like this. The only rappers who can come close to this, is Jay-Z and Kanye West -- and that's it. No one else.
Dre and Snoop were in the right time, right moment. This was a time where gangster hip-hop was mainstream. Now you have to be very clean and stylish and business like. Look at Snoop and Dre -- they weren't very stylish. They looked like two dudes you see at the corner you don't wanna make eye contact with.
I grew up to "Death Row" music. It was all my brothers played in the house. West coast hip-hop was dominant in the 1990s; it basically took over the whole decade. The only east coast hip-hop rappers that were around in the 90's, were Biggie Smalls and a little of Jay-Z. After Biggie and Tupac Shakur passed, east coast hip-hop took over immensely. With Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye West and P.Diddy's "Bad Boy" entertainment, hip-hop took a big shift when those kings of rap (Pac & Biggie) died.
Although Dre and Snoop stood around for a little while, in late 90's and into the 2000's. Dre's "2001" album (where this song -- "Still Dre" -- is from) was his last, big album, he ever released. But after that, he brought in Eminem, made some hits with him and then he went off the sunset. Now he's a billionaire. What he did so much for hip-hop and music in general for all those years, is amazing. It really is. Dre's not capturing the younger demographic, but they have his earphones on. Talk about success.
Snoop stood around in the 2000s for a long time. If you look at Snoop's career, we should be praising him more, instead of putting on stupid videos where he's dress like a white woman -- or a white boy (whatever that was). He gets treated like crap -- let's be honest. Look what the guy's done! Look at the songs he's done. Snoop's one of the greatest rappers of all-time and not once I've seen get presented a lifetime achievement award, in any of these award shows. He doesn't get the respect he deserves.
"Still Dre" is my #TBT Music Video of the Day. Would love to see Dre and Snoop perform one more time, together.
