LL Cool J - "Going Back To Cali" 1989
Today I'm stylin' and profilin' LL Cool J's "Going Back To Cali" as this week's Throwback Thursday music video of the day.
One of the first ever artisy, hip-hop videos. The way it was filmed for a hip-hop video, wasn't anything like the other rap videos in the late 80's. The other videos had chicks shaking their asses, gold chains, cop brutality. "Going Back To Cali" was different. And it changed the game.
It was a good video and a good song. Lyrically, it's Cool J saying: California's not for me. Cool J was a kid from Long Island, New York -- and in the video he talks about California as if he's been there once or twice and didn't like it. In the video it's almost like he's saying: 'Yea, California has nice weather, women, cars, but I'm not feeling it'. He went back to Cali, tried it out, but ain't going back.
What Rapper Reminds Me Of LL Cool J, Today? Drake. Cool J and Drake are the only rappers who sang about love and gentleness to woman. Though, I do think Cool J was better, from the standpoint of sound. Drake sounds good, but doesn't sound as aggressive as Cool J did.
So there's my TBT music of the day! Enjoy!
